RICH AND FAMOUS

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried has been undergoing cognitive therapy sessions to help cope with panic attacks brought on by the pressures of fame. The Mamma Mia! star admits she feels anxious ahead of premieres and live interviews and she’s sought professional help to combat her issues.
“I still do get terribly nervous, and that’s partly due to the fact I think too much and over-analyze things. I’ll start worrying about my parents or my dog, and I’ll picture him opening the window of my apartment and falling out, even though I can’t get that thing open myself.”

As the exposure of panic attacks has grown in recent years, most people now understand that it is not a condition reserved for the deranged or psychotic. Rather, it is a common disorder that affects over four million Americans.
Paula Deen

This chef famous for cooking up Southern dishes on the Food Network battled agoraphobia, the fear of being outside of one’s home or in a crowded area, for more than 20 years. In fact, her fear was so intense that even going to the supermarket was a challenge. “I learned to cook with the ingredients they kept close to the door,” she told the New York Times.

Xanax, anyone? The moody pop singer says that he keeps this anti-anxiety medication in his pocket at all times to combat his anxiety attacks. Also known by the generic name alprazolam, Xanax is a prescription medication commonly used to treat anxiety and panic attacks.

Vinny Guadagnino

The sensitive star of Jersey Shore left during filming the fifth season because of his anxiety, a condition he’s been battling since high school. "It’s a terrible environment for me to be in when I’m anxious because there’s drinking involved, there’s fighting involved, a lack of sleep, a lack of privacy,” Guadagnino, 24, said in a campaign for The Jed Foundation, a non-profit that encourages teenagers and college students to seek help for their emotional problems.

Barbra Streisand

Her mother tried to convince her not to pursue singing, indicating she wasn’t pretty enough. Yet, the maverick spirit of Barbra Streisand dared to go where her mother said she couldn’t – and she succeeded. However, an unexpected fear took away her ability to sing live in concert for nearly 3 decades. Barbra is a victim of social anxiety that began when she couldn’t remember lyrics to a song she was singing in concert. Streisand was so traumatized by her perceived failure she withdrew from public singing. She still recorded music and she starred and directed movies, but the stage was a frightening place for someone that had seemed so unstoppable.
